Abstract

Acupuncture represents an important resource in complementary medicine and it is indicated with good levels of evidence in a variety of health problems. Its mechanisms are explained mainly, but not completely, by the release of endogenous opioids and their influence on the autonomic nervous system. Cervicalgia, lumbago, toothache, headaches and knee pain are some of its indications, having a low percentage of side effects and complications. In Chile, its practice is regulated by the Ministry of Health.
